Lexie, a Graduate Council Fellow for the 2023-2024 school year, conducts research under the supervision of her advisor, Dr. Emily Elliott, in the Coastal Research and Events Lab (Co.R.E. Lab). Her research focuses on understanding how barrier island geomorphology influences the deposition of preserved paleotempestites along the Northern Gulf of Mexico and the Eastern Coast of the United States. She aims to translate her research findings into actionable measures for better protecting vulnerable communities. During the summer, Lexie serves as a teaching and research assistant at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, where she collects data using vibracores, push cores, piston cores, and tree cores. Throughout the academic year, she analyzes her data in the University of Alabama lab with support from undergraduate research assistants. Lexie has gained valuable experience through internships with Dr. Yuehan Lu, as an undergraduate researcher for Dr. Geoffrey Tick, and as an intern with the Geological Survey of Alabama under the supervision of Daniel West, a member of the inaugural trainee cohort. Since October 2022, she has been an affiliated member of the Alabama Water Institute and is eager to further expand her knowledge through this traineeship with the Alabama Water Institute.
